a blog from Lunar Telephone Company
Let’s start with the name.
Telemetry is the science of transmitting data from one place to another - often from remote, mysterious, or hard-to-reach locations. Like… say, the Moon. Or the middle of a particularly tricky lighting install. Or Chris’s brain.
Originally coined in the 1800s (and really hitting its stride during the Space Race), telemetry allowed scientists to monitor things like spacecraft velocity or oxygen levels. It’s how Earth stayed in touch with the incredible, the invisible, and the far away. NASA’s systems were so precise during the Apollo era that, according to legend, they could even detect the crinkle of a potato chip bag inside the spacecraft. Whether myth or mission log, it’s a perfect example of how deeply tuned-in you can be when you’re really listening.
Within themed entertainment, telemetry might be ride system or show control system data, reporting on the status of lighting, video, or audio or identifying the location of a ride vehicle or if all systems are “go” for the start of a show.
This blog — Telemetry — is our way of transmitting a few signals from the orbit of Lunar Telephone Company. You can expect occasional updates, thought bubbles, behind-the-scenes dispatches, cosmic curiosities, and maybe the odd post about a project we’re particularly proud of.
What will we write about?
Creative direction and lighting design for themed entertainment, live entertainment, and architecture
Thoughts on collaboration, storytelling, technology, and working across disciplines
Project updates and case studies — from theme parks to art exhibits, retail to rockets (well, hopefully rockets one day)
Industry trends, playful observations, and lunar-leaning design experiments
How often?
Honestly? We’re still figuring that out. Weekly-ish, if the signals are clear and the Earth station is staffed. Sometimes it’ll be Chris Werner typing late at night in the soft glow of a console screen. Sometimes a collaborator. Maybe someday… telemetry from a reader?
Why a blog at all?
Because good communication is part of good relationships. Because storytelling is a craft worth sharing. Because hearing about the experiences of colleagues helps us all practice our craft better. Because we wanted a space to get a little weird, a little thoughtful, and maybe a little inspirational.
And because we have WAY too many space and telecom puns to contain in a contact form.
Got a question?
Something you’ve always wondered about themed entertainment? Lighting systems? The future of lunar switchboards? Send it our way — we might just answer it here.
Welcome to Telemetry.
Stay tuned. Stay curious. Stay in touch.
